Combining sublimation printing with HTV for vibrant designs

Jun 28, 2024

Combining sublimation printing with Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) can result in vibrant and unique designs. This hybrid technique allows you to use the bright, full-color prints of sublimation along with the versatility and texture of HTV. Here’s a step-by-step guide to achieve this:

Materials Needed:

  • Sublimation printer and sublimation paper
  • Sublimation ink
  • White or light-colored polyester garment
  • Printable HTV (white or light-colored)
  • Vinyl cutter
  • Weeding tool
  • Heat press
  • Teflon sheet or parchment paper

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Design Preparation:
    • Create Your Design: Design your artwork using graphic design software. Split the design into two parts: the part that will be sublimated and the part that will be cut from HTV.
    • Print the Sublimation Design: Print the part of the design that will be sublimated onto sublimation paper using sublimation ink. Remember to mirror the design before printing.
  2. Cutting the HTV:
    • Cut the HTV: Load your printable HTV into the vinyl cutter and cut according to your design. Remember to mirror the design if necessary.
    • Weed the HTV: Weed out the excess vinyl from the HTV, leaving only the desired design.
  3. Prepping the Garment:
    • Preheat the Garment: Preheat your garment for a few seconds to remove any moisture and wrinkles.
  4. Applying HTV:
    • Press the HTV: Place the HTV onto the garment. Cover with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper and press according to the recommended temperature and time settings for your HTV. This is usually around 300°F for 10-15 seconds.
    • Peel Carrier Sheet: Carefully peel off the carrier sheet while warm or cold, depending on the HTV type.
  5. Sublimation on HTV:
    • Position the Sublimation Print: Place the printed sublimation paper face down on the HTV that you have already pressed onto the garment. Ensure the printed design aligns perfectly with the HTV.
    • Press for Sublimation: Cover with a Teflon sheet and press at a higher temperature (usually around 400°F) for 30-60 seconds. The exact time and temperature may vary depending on your sublimation paper and ink manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Peel the Sublimation Paper: Carefully peel off the sublimation paper to reveal the vibrant sublimated design on the HTV.
  6. Final Pressing:
    • Ensure Adherence: Give the entire design a final press for about 5-10 seconds to ensure all layers are securely adhered. Use a Teflon sheet to protect the design.
  7. Cooling and Inspection:
    • Allow to Cool: Let the garment cool slightly before inspecting the design.
    • Check for Quality: Ensure the design is vibrant and fully adhered. If any areas need additional pressing, cover with a Teflon sheet and press again for a few seconds.

Tips for Best Results:

  • Use a Heat Press: For consistent and even results, a heat press is recommended over an iron.
  • Garment Selection: Use white or light-colored polyester garments for the best sublimation results. Sublimation only works well on polyester or polyester-coated surfaces.
  • Printable HTV: Ensure you are using printable HTV that is compatible with sublimation.

Care Instructions:

  • Wash Inside Out: Advise washing the garment inside out in cold water.
  • Avoid High Heat: Avoid ironing directly on the design and tumble dry on low heat to prolong the life of the design.

By following these steps, you can combine sublimation printing with HTV to create vibrant, multi-dimensional designs that stand out.
