Create Your Design: Use vector graphic software (like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW) to design your multi-layered artwork. Ensure each color layer is on a separate layer in your design file.
Mirror the Design: Before cutting, make sure to mirror each layer of the design since HTV is applied face down.
Cutting the Vinyl:
Cut Each Color Separately: Load each color/type of HTV into your vinyl cutter one at a time and cut according to your design. Remember to adjust the cutting settings based on the type of HTV you are using.
Weeding:
Remove Excess Vinyl: Weed out the excess vinyl from each cut piece using a weeding tool, leaving only the desired parts of your design on the carrier sheet.
Prepping the Garment:
Preheat the Garment: Preheat your garment for a few seconds to remove any moisture and wrinkles.
Layering the HTV:
Start with the Bottom Layer: Place the first layer (bottom-most layer) of HTV onto the garment. Cover with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper.
Heat Press: Press according to the recommended temperature and time settings for the type of HTV you are using (usually around 300°F for 10-15 seconds). Lightly press just enough to tack it down (not the full pressing time).
Peel Carrier Sheet: Carefully peel off the carrier sheet while warm or cold depending on the HTV type.
Aligning Subsequent Layers:
Place Next Layer: Position the next layer of HTV on top of the first. Use the previous layer as a guide to align it correctly.
Press Each Layer Briefly: Press each subsequent layer for a shorter time (5-7 seconds) to prevent overheating the layers underneath. Cover with a Teflon sheet each time.
Final Pressing:
Full Press: Once all layers are applied, give the entire design a final press for about 10-15 seconds to ensure all layers are fully adhered and smooth.
Cooling and Peeling:
Allow to Cool: Let the garment cool slightly before peeling the final carrier sheets, especially for complex designs to ensure they don’t lift.
Finishing Touches:
Inspect the Design: Check the design for any areas that may need additional pressing. If necessary, cover with a Teflon sheet and press again for a few seconds.
Care Instructions:
Provide Care Instructions: Advise washing the garment inside out in cold water and avoiding high heat when ironing to prolong the life of the HTV design.
Tips for Best Results:
Use a Heat Press: For consistent results, a heat press is preferable over an iron as it provides even heat and pressure.
Pressing Pillow: Use a pressing pillow for even pressure on garments with seams or uneven surfaces.
Test Press: Always do a test press on a scrap piece of fabric or a sample to ensure you have the right settings.
